Reader - Dr. Mark Eaton

The work of the Reader

In Post-Reformation times the Church of England began to appoint Readers to work alongside clergy in the ministry of the church.
Readers are lay people who have been selected, trained and licensed by the Bishop of the diocese to preach, teach and lead worship in a pastoral context. Readers can also conduct funerals and exercise a wide variety of other ministries such as pastoral care for the sick and visiting them, at home and in hospital. There are more than 10,000 active Readers in the Church of England. Most are licensed to a parish but some are chaplains in prisons, hospitals, hospices or schools.

Mark undertook training for three years in the programme organised by the Diocese and was licensed as a Reader by the Bishop of St Albans on 28 June 2015. Alongside his Reader ministry he continues to work part-time as a Management Consultant. As well as being a Reader, he is also our church Treaurer.
