The Asheteria

In May 2010, a group of 20 young people in Ashwell got together over pizza to talk about what they'd like to see happen for their age group in the village . and from this meeting, the 'Asheteria' drop-in café was born!

The Asheteria is run by a team of volunteers from St Mary's Church and is held at the United Reformed Church Hall most Saturday evenings. It is designed as a fun and friendly space to give young people aged 10-16 somewhere to go with their friends on a Saturday night. It's also a place that they can use to access support and ask questions about any issues relating to life and faith that they may come across.

Between 5.30pm and 7.30pm all young people - regardless of background - are invited to come along and, for a small charge of 50p on the door, are able to enjoy computer games, a pool table, art activities, a 'chill-out' zone and, of course, the café itself with its famous 'toastie' menu! The 'campfire toastie', with a sticky centre of chocolate spread and marshmallow, is especially popular.

We began in June with about ten young people attending each week but I am pleased to say that at present we are seeing between 20 and 30 on a weekly basis, with over 40 young people on our register. It is such a fantastic opportunity to get to know all the young people; I don't think anyone - young or old - has experienced the Asheteria and gone away without a positive experience! We have also enjoyed various events such as the 'big sleep out' in St Mary's Church in July and, more recently, our October residential to the Herts Young Mariners Base where young people from Ashwell joined with young people from Baldock and the surrounding area to try out some new experiences and build friendships.

We are looking forward to seeing what the future brings for the Asheteria and are keen to find new ways in which we can continue to serve Ashwell's young people.
