St Mary’s needs some £2500 a week for its ministry of worship, witness, service and mission, or around £35 for each person in the congregation each Sunday.
Our giving sustains:
- Parish ministry – allowing us to visit ill people, comfort the bereaved, share the Gospel, lead worship
- Our church building – not only a sacred place dedicated to worship, prayer and witness but a valuable facility for the whole community.
- The work of clergy in other less well-off parishes across the diocese, in service training for clergy and Readers (Lay Ministers) and the training of new clergy and Readers and the provision of Safeguarding services.
- Wider mission both in this diocese of St Albans, and overseas – for people we will never meet but to whom we are able to give practical support.
- The upkeep and maintenance of the parish room as a venue for church and village events and to host the Mobile Post office service 3x a week.
This ministry not only supplies the needs of the Saints but overflows with
many thanksgivings to God. 2 Cor 9:12
We are continually looking for opportunities to cut costs but many of our costs are “fixed”. We need to contribute significantly to the salary and housing costs of our Rector. We have to heat, light, maintain and insure the church and the Parish Room. We have to pay our Parish Administrator. We therefore have somewhat limited scope to make cost savings, so the challenge is to increase our income.
Did you know?
St Mary’s welcomes all members of the congregation. Whether you are worshipping with us short or long-term we encourage you to make a contribution to the life of St. Mary’s, spiritually, socially, practically and financially as your means allow.
St. Mary’s is funded almost exclusively by donations from our congregation. We do not receive grants from the government, the diocese or the rest of the Church of England, or from other charities.
Some ways to give to St Mary’s
Our Planned Giving Scheme About 120 people and families at St Mary’s give regularly through the Planned Giving scheme. Thought this you can give either by Standing Order or through the weekly envelope scheme. If you are not yet a member of the scheme and would like to join or if you would like to consider increasing the amount you give, please speak to our Treasure (Mark Eaton) or Gift Aid Co-ordinator (John Paramour) or fill out the form ( PDF | Word ). After completion, send it the Gift Aid Co-ordinator c/o the Parish Office or scan it and email it to email@example.com
Remember St Mary’s in your will Remembering St Mary’s in your will is one way to help ensure the future of our church for the next generation. St Mary’s was blessed to receive certain legacies in the past which have funded a number of major projects we would not otherwise have been able to afford.
Make a one-off donation? If you cannot commit to regular giving or if you wish to top up your regular giving, you can make a one-off donation. If you are a UK taxpayer, please consider completing a Gift Aid envelope to enable us to reclaim some of the tax on your donation. Envelopes can be placed in the weekly collection. There is also a one off £5 “Tap and Donate” Card Reader at the back of the church
Our own giving
In line with Biblical principles, we used to give 10% of our income to charitable causes but this has had to be constrained in order to meet the pressing needs of the parish itself. We do try and raise money for particular charities and this includes the Christingle (for the Children’s Society) the “Big Brekkie” (for Christian Aid) and the Harvest Tea / Supper (for the annual Bishops Harvest Appeal). We also promote a “Charity of the month” each month and encourage parishioners to give to this through special envelopes.
We also take special collections to meet urgent needs and sudden emergencies such as a new refugee crisis.
Fundraise for St Mary’s at no cost to yourself
Many internet retailers including John Lewis, M&S and Amazon and over 2,000 others pay commission for business and St Mary’s can receive this commission (which does not increase the cost to you).
By registering at www.easyfundraising.org.uk and then visiting there just before you shop you can help the ministry at St Mary’s; here are some helpful hints to maximise your giving:
- Make sure you select the Gift Aid option when registering (if this applies to you).
- Consider downloading the special toolbar. Each time you visit a website that participates, you will be prompted to collect funds for St Mary’s – see www.easyfundraising.org.uk/donation-reminder/
We are also registered with Amazon Smile. If you enter the Amazon web site through this portal and register St Mayr’s Ashwell PCC as you charity of choice Amazon will denote a % of your spend to st Mary’s.
Could you donate your time and talents? Fundraising events like Ashwell at Home, The Music Festival, The Flea Market, The Book Fair and The Christmas Fair need significant numbers of people to set up and run them. Could you offer to help even if it is only for a few hours? If so please look out for the requests for help at the time or give your name to the Parish office.
