A small band of enthusiastic servers and bakers provide delicious afternoon teas in the Parish Church Room every Sunday between 2:30pm-5:00pm all year round. From Easter to October this is run by the church and raises funds for our restoration fund. From October to Easter it is run by Ashwell Museum to raise funds for themselves.
The event is very popular with many local residents, people enjoying walks in the local area and visitors on holiday at the local caravan club site. Ashwell is en-route for many cycling clubs, whose members are always welcome.
The money raised from Sunday afternoon teas makes a substantial contribution to the restoration fund for St.Mary's Church. Over the summer of 2024, £2,745 was raised! It’s also a great opportunity to meet new people, often people who live close by to us but we have never had the opportunity to meet. Come and join us for a chat over a cup of tea and a slice of home-baked cake or a scone.
The tradition of 'Sunday afternoon teas in Ashwell' is only made possible by the willing team of volunteers; a rota is located at the back of St Mary’s church, so please add your name and contact details if you are able to help, either by baking a cake or scones, or by serving tea and cakes and washing up on the day. It’s also an ideal volunteering opportunity for young people, especially those undertaking the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. For more details, or to volunteer, please contact the organiser Judy Banham via email: judy.banham@btinternet.com, or the Parish Office 01462 743922 or via email: office@stmarysashwell.org.uk.
